Eventful Evening for the Girls Football Tournament

admin on: Football Blog 2018/19 Season

Girls from Yr 5 and 6 travelled to Lostock Hall High School on Tuesday this week to take part in the first competition of the year, the Girls Football tournament. There were 20 different schools involved in the night and we were split into a group of five schools. For most of the team it was not only their first time to represent the school, but it was their first time playing competitive matches too and what struck Mr. Stammers most was the enthusiasm and spirit that the girls showed.

Seven children took part from Little Hoole in a 6-a-side competition, but after losing the first game against St Oswald's 1-0, we were down to just 6 girls in the team during the second match when Naomi took a nasty knock to the ankle which I believe has ended up in a sprain and is very sore to walk on. I'm convinced she was more upset about not being allowed to play on than the pain itself!

A 2-0 defeat to an impressive Whitefield spoilt any hope of qualifying to the next stages but the evening was about opportunity and hopefully discovering an enjoyment playing a sport not tried before by most of the team. Our final game finished 0-0, which so easily could have been 5-0 to us but for some excellent shots going the wrong side of the post and into the keepers hands.

Mr. Stammers said it was an absolute pleasure to coach the children for the tournament. They were disappointed, but given that 6 of the 7 girls who played were Yr 5, if we can play some more matches this year as a team we will come back even stronger next year. Thank you to all the parents who travelled with us and supported the children throughout.

It would be great to get some reaction from the children that took part. Please fee free to enter your comments below.
